6 MAJOR ELEMENTS OF NUTRITION

Carbs
- Your main source of energy
- 3 types:
- sugars (simple, fast-digesting)
- starches (complex, slow-digesting)
- fiber (non-digestible, doesn’t give energy, just helps with body function)

Fats
- Secondary source of energy/ energy used at rest
- Uses: helps absorb vitamins, protects organs
- 2 types:
- good (unsaturated)
- bad (saturated/trans)

Protein
- Uses: energy, builds muscle, hormone function, immune system function, digestive enzymes
- 1 whole protein = 20 amino acids
- 11 = non-essential (your body makes on own)
- 9 = essential (you need to consume)

Vitamins
- 13 total
- 2 types:
- water soluble (Vitamin C, B’s)
- fat soluble (vitamins A, D, E, K)

Minerals
- 15 total
- 2 types:
- trace minerals (copper, zinc, iron)
- major minerals (sodium, potassium)
